Based on a true story. Spring 1948. It’s been three years since the fall of Berlin and the end of the war for Germany, but a new war fraught with political and military tension is gripping the world. A silent and deadly war that will last for decades and Harold Kellner finds himself smack in the middle of it - in cold war Russia. Born in Germany in 1930, Harold Kellner was raised on Nazi propaganda and like all German boys his age, was forced to become a part of Hitler’s war machine. As the war raged on and the tides turned, Harold and his best friend, Karl Veth, became disillusioned with Hitler and his war and their loyalty to the Fatherland waned. At fourteen years old, they saw no reason to fight to the death and planned a strategy to survive. They narrowly escaped death as Berlin fell and were eventually arrested by a Russian Political Kommissar who planned to use them for his own gains. They carried out secret missions for the Kommissar and over time he was not only impressed by their intelligence and resourcefulness - he developed a fondness for the boys as well. When Harold’s dream of being reunited with his family was shattered, he accepted an offer by the Kommissar to be adopted and become his protégé. When he accepted the offer to be adopted, Harold knew of the Kommissar’s political ambitions and that he would be expected to continue conducting clandestine operations for him. In the Spring of 1948, Harold is sent on a number of missions that not only pull him deeper into the world of Soviet intelligence, but also involve eliminating one of the Kommissar’s political rivals. Armed with KGB credentials, his life is becoming more dangerous than it was during the war in Germany. Adept at learning new languages, Harold is sent to stay with a Swiss banker and his family between missions to further his language studies. The Kommissar has plans to infiltrate Stalin’s ranks by sending Harold in as a translator, but Harold begins to develop plans of his own. Languages are not the only thing Harold is learning during his time with the Swiss banker as he begins to understand how the political and financial worlds truly operate. There are secrets the banker is willing to share with the protégé of a Russian Political Kommissar. Author’s Note Harold Kellner’s story began in the Degree series. He was the best friend of Karl Veth, the main character in the books. After World War II ended, their lives took off in two completely different directions. Postwar Drifter is the first book in The Kellner Chronicles, a new series based on Harold’s life. And, as with Karl’s story in the Degree books, The Kellner Chronicles are based on a true story.
Postwar Drifter The Kellner Chronicles Volume 1 Horst Christian 9781533104625 Books
Postwar Drifter is book number five in a series. The stories of Karl and Harold begin in the first book "Children To A Degree - Growing Up Under the Third Reich," and continue in "Loyal To A Degree" (Book 2), "Trust To A Degree" (Book 3) and "Partners To A Degree" (Book 4).After reading Children to a Degree I purchased the following three books and finished reading all four books within three days. They were that engaging and captivating. When Postwar Drifter came on sale I bought it and read it on one day! I heartily recommend all five books, and am waiting for book six with great anticipation! They are that good.
As a native German speaking author, Horst Christian tells his autobiographical story, engaging the reader in the turmoil of Germany as seen through his and his friend Harold's eyes as a members of the Hitler youth. While some of their experiences are chilling and more than a bit scary, others are endearing and heartwarming. Horst doesn't write about things he didn't experience, so don't expect comments about the camps. That is not his story.
These stories give readers a insight into many of the cultural factors that existed in the German mindset at that time in history. Many people tend to assume that all cultural mindsets are similar, but nothing could be farther from the truth.
These books provide a rare glimpse into Berlin and Germany in the 1940s and later, with a personal point of view that would be difficult to find elsewhere if at all. I highly recommend the entire series and suggest you read them in order. It is my great hope that these will be made into films, although I believe very few directors could do them justice. (I'm thinking Jean-Jacques Annaud is one that could (Enemy at the Gates), or maybe Ron Howard.)
I am grateful the author took the time to tell his and Harold's stories. Start with Children To A Degree... you will want to read the rest, including Postwar Drifter!

Postwar Drifter The Kellner Chronicles Volume 1 Horst Christian 9781533104625 Books Reviews
I read the full story in 2 days. All the books in the series are fascinating and offer a glimpse into post-war Europe. The wait for the next book will be excruciating but worth it.
If you need to catch up with this great series of books by the author, do it. Mr. Christian writes from his experiences and the love of his friend. Post war Europe where the chaos is closing into the beginning of the Cold War.
If you have read the four prior books by this author about Karl Verth, you will enjoy this continuing story that takes place after the war. Easy to read but interesting and enjoyable. The author is basing the life of Karl on his own life in Germany before and during WWII. First 4 books Children To A Degree, Loyal To A Degree, Trust To A Degree, Partners To A Degree.
I have followed Harold and Karl from the beginning. I find their experiences riveting and enlightening. Their reactions to the war and postwar situations put me back in time. I especially enjoy the reactions to American and west European customs and riches. This is true of all of the books in the series. This book continues the story of Harold in his fascinating experience with Russian intrigue. I can't wait for the next book.
I just finished "Postwar Drifter" , as always ,I was captivated by Harold and The mention of Karl . I will not rush the author, but I can not wait for "Book 2" of " The Kellner Chronicals " a must read .I would give ten stars !!!!!!!!!!
I am so happy to have this series begin and then next series on Karl's life! I don't know what to say except that Christian's books are all worth reading...better than fiction!!
I have greatly enjoyed the whole series by Horst Christian. I was very much like a person on the desert finding water and is unable to drink it fast enough. These series was so wonderful I could not read them fast enough. Much of the story is based on his life during WWII living in and around Berlin. He vividly describes the great difficulties and hardships endured by the children including himself and his family and friends both young and old. His story doesn't center on the horror of the concentration camps but rather on the lesser known hardships of those not arrested. I highly recommend reading the whole series starting with "Children To A Lesser Degree". If you find any other works by this author buy them and read them. Mr Christian's works are deeply heartfelt and moving as only someone who was there would be capable of writing. I would call this series historical fiction and he writes so well it is hard to seperate the history from the fiction. Great job Mr. Christian and thank you so much. Both entertaining and deeply moving.
